Chefchaouen: Funky Blue Medina

IMG_1897With our broken Arabic and minimal French we snagged a petite taxi from Tangier to Chefchaouen. A 4 hour, very hilarious, very mountainous, very oh-my-god-we-might-just-die ride. The driver was cooky and fearless… to say the least.

Nestled in the middle of the Rif Mountains this blue city stands out among its brown and green backdrop with bold azure hues and royal tones. Folklore believes that Jewish settlers painted the walls to reflect the heavens and seas as an homage to God. Locals say it deters mosquitos. Either way it is breathtaking with every turn.
